Why is Okinawa so special?

Situated far away from mainland Japan, Okinawa consists of about 160 lively islands. There are many things that make Okinawa so special compared to mainland Japanese cities like Tokyo. But the main reason that makes Okinawa so unique is the influence from Chinese and South Asian countries via trade of goods and culture. This made this place rich in cultural diversity and expression. This occurred from around the 14th century to the 19th century when it was under the Ryukyu kingdom for about 450 years.

The kingdom was flourishing well but a tragedy took place in the year 1945. It was the battle of Okinawa in which the combat between US and Japanese forces led to massive destruction. About 200,000 people in which about 94,000 were Okinawan citizens. But after their departure in 1972, Okinawa has returned to being a wonder it used to be and is nowadays synonymous to the “paradise on earth”.
